Non-Toxic Tuesday #1: Why Your Kitchen Spray Is the Perfect Place to Start
If you're beginning your low-tox journey, you might be wondering where to start.
My advice? Your kitchen spray.
It's one of the products many of us use every single day. We spray our worktops before cooking, after meals and whenever we wipe down surfaces. Because it's used so frequently, swapping your kitchen cleaner can be one of the simplest and most practical changes you make.
Why do people choose to switch?
Many conventional kitchen sprays contain a combination of ingredients such as surfactants (cleaning agents), preservatives, solvents and synthetic fragrances. These ingredients are approved for use in household cleaning products, but some people prefer to reduce their exposure to heavily fragranced products or simplify the number of chemicals they use around the home.
For some individuals, strong fragrances can contribute to headaches or irritate sensitive skin or airways. Others simply prefer products with fewer ingredients and a lighter scent.
There isn't a one-size-fits-all approach, and low-tox living isn't about fearβit's about making informed choices that work for you and your family.
Less really can be more
One of the biggest myths is that your home needs lots of different products to stay clean.
In reality, a good quality multi-purpose cleaner is often enough for everyday kitchen cleaning. Instead of filling a cupboard with dozens of bottles, you can simplify your routine and still keep your kitchen looking its best.
My Natural Kitchen Spray Recipe
This is the recipe I use for everyday cleaning around my home.
Ingredients
500 ml distilled or cooled boiled water
2 tablespoons white vinegar*
1 teaspoon eco-friendly washing-up liquid
10 drops Lemon essential oil
10 drops Tea Tree essential oil
5 drops Rosemary essential oil
Pour all the ingredients into a clean 500 ml spray bottle and gently shake before each use.
Why these essential oils?
π Lemon β leaves a bright, fresh citrus aroma.
πΏ Tea Tree β valued for its cleansing properties and a favourite in many natural cleaning routines.
π± Rosemary β adds a fresh herbal scent and blends beautifully with lemon and tea tree.
* Vinegar is useful for many hard surfaces but should not be used on natural stone such as marble, granite or limestone.
A few simple tips
β Always label homemade cleaning products.
β Keep out of reach of children and pets.
β Test on a small, inconspicuous area first.
β Store away from direct sunlight.
β Remember that homemade cleaners are best suited to everyday household cleaning rather than disinfecting in situations where a disinfectant is specifically required.
My biggest piece of advice
Please don't feel you need to throw everything away and start again.
That isn't what low-tox living is about.
Simply use up what you already have and replace products one at a time as they run out. It's kinder to your wallet, reduces waste and makes the whole journey feel much more achievable.
Small swaps soon become everyday habits.
